RSD Signs & Symptoms
Even though Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, or RSD, was first diagnosed in the 1800's, there is still little known about this painful and life altering disease. Even the medical journals and articles available differ as to the stages and progression of RSD. As with any disease, no two cases are exactly the same. RSD has at least three stages and may have as many as five. There are also many different symptoms of RSD and not all patients exhibit all symptoms.
RSD is usually found in the extremities and is caused by some type of trauma to the nervous system such as a crush injury, hand or foot surgery and extended nerve compression. Some of the symptoms of the disease include continued pain after the injury has healed; progressive burning pain that is more severe than what would be normal to the particular injury; swelling; discoloration of the skin; pain that does not lessen with regular pain medication; a feeling of coldness in the effected area and severe pain caused from a light touch.
There are associated problems as well which include a spreading of the pain to other parts of the body; depression and problems sleeping.
Unfortunately RSD is not often diagnosed immediately, yet all sources indicate that if RSD is diagnosed early there is a much better chance of the patient responding to treatment.
